Pedestrian Safety Event 3/21

3/15/2016

Prior to our Annual Meeting and Open House on March 21, we are working with the Saint Paul Police and the Stop for Me campaign on a pedestrian safety/driver education event. The goal is to reach ZERO pedestrian deaths from pedestrian and car interactions. The state law is that drivers must stop for all pedestrians at ANY crosswalk - marked or unmarked. This means that every intersection regardless of markings is a crosswalk where drivers should yield to pedestrians. It is the pedestrian's responsibility to assure that they are seen and that drivers know they are trying to cross. On multi-lane streets, they should also make sure that each line of traffic is stopping before proceeding. It is the drivers' responsibility to be aware of pedestrians and to stop well back of where they intend to cross.

So Monday, March 21, we will be having pedestrians crossing at 5th Street and White Bear between 3 and 4:30p to demonstrate the law. Police will be on hand to ticket drivers who do not yield. (They will also  be ticketing speeders!)

If you would like to join the effort, contact our office, or show up at 5th and White Bear at about 3p on the 21st.
