Join the District 1 Council

The District Council is governed by a board of volunteers. Serving on the board is a way to serve your community and help make decisions about land use and development, approaches to youth development, and building the community. A formal board member "job description" is below. For more specifics or any questions, do not hesitate to contact our office (651.578.7600). We also have two formal committees and one standing Task Force - the Land Use Committee and COSCo (Communications, Outreach and Safety Committee), and the Youth Task Force. These committees welcome the participation of interested community members.

Overview of the District 1 Council

The District 1 Community Council is a 501(c)3 tax-deductible non-profit organization. The Council’s mission is to share knowledge and power, to organize and to advocate for the people who live and work in our neighborhoods. We build leadership to seize opportunities and work for social and racial justice.  Our vision for the district is that we will be one in which we respect the racial, ethnic and social diversity of our neighborhoods, where trust grows among us, and all of us prosper. Our programs focus on organizing residents to participate in decisions related to land use, youth development, environmental concerns, and other issues they define as important to their lives and community. The Council is dedicated to the democratic process, openness in its operations, and is supportive of diverse perspectives.

The Council expects its board to reflect the varied backgrounds and interests of its constituents. Our values are as follows:
  1. Trust and Respect - We strive to achieve trust for and respect from each other as we work together towards our shared goals and a pluralistic community.
  2. Equity, Justice and Power - We share power to give us leverage to build equity and work for justice in our community.
  3. Solidarity - We stand together and lead by example to fight oppression in all forms for the members of our community.
  4. Sustainability - We support a healthy and sustainable environment for the long term prosperity and livability of our community and its members.

Board Member's Primary Responsibilities

The board of directors of the District 1 Community Council is legally responsible for all activities of the organization. The board sets goals, determines organizational policies that guide staff implementation of goals, provides financial oversight and approves and monitors the annual budget. Each member of the board also sits on one of the standing committees of the Council.
