SouthEast Community Organization's Earth Day clean-up event has been happening for over 20 years and is a chance for friends, neighbors, and co-workers to help clean up our community. Individuals and groups of all ages and sizes can volunteer to help. With more volunteers, we can we can remove more litter from our community’s streets, road sides and parks.
The Earth Day Clean-Up happens on a Saturday close to Earth Day (April 22nd). Check our social media, website or newsletter to find out when local activities are happening. Volunteers are always needed for picking up trash and site leaders to help oversee clean-up volunteers. To participate, call Ramsey County Parks and Rec Department at 651-748-2500, x400. Once you are registered, a volunteer will contact you with complete details, as well as your assigned clean-up location and where to meet. This day doesn't work for you? or you want to do more? The City has a program for people to adopt a park or to adopt a block for clean up. The Parks Department does a big spring clean up around Earth Day, similar to the Ramsey County event. In addition, the Public Works Department has a program called the COME CLEAN program that allows people to adopt a block or intersection for clean up. This program actually started in our district! |
Event History
The event began in 1993 when a group of Battle Creek area residents coordinated a small clean-up effort in the park areas adjacent to their neighborhood. Since that time, the Battle Creek Clean-Up has grown to over 300 volunteers who collect several tons of trash and debris each year! *The first Earth Day was held April 22, 1970, and initiated by Gaylord Nelson, then-U.S. Senator from WI, who wanted to draw attention to the damage done by a big oil spill off the coast of California. Forty-five plus years later, it’s an occasion for park cleanups, recycling drives and other efforts to tidy up the planet. |
Drop Off Day is usually held every June at Harding High School parking lot. It is where people can bring tires, mattresses, old appliances, electronics, bikes, confidential paper for shredding, and more to get rid of them for low-cost or no-cost. (See images for more details.)
An event like this takes a lot of volunteers to make it a success. We need people like you to help us out! We need people to direct traffic, talk to people donating, help unload donations, and more. We have jobs with heavy lifting and jobs with no lifting. The first shift is from 7:30 AM to 11:00 AM, and the second shift is from 10:30 AM to 2:00 PM. Volunteers get to bring in a free load of donations themselves, light breakfast/light lunch, and entered into a raffle to win a $100 gift card! (One per shift) For more info contact [email protected] or call 651-578-7600. |
