Board Meeting Notes - May 22, 2017

6/6/2017

There were no community presentations this month because of the amount of board business we needed to complete.

We were to formalize committee assignments at this meeting, following the election of new members and the possibility for maximizing the effectiveness of each of our three working committees - Land Use, Communication/Outreach and Safety (COSCo), and the Youth Task Force (now to be called the Youth Programming Committee). We had a discussion of those assignments and voted to maintain existing board membership for one more month as we tried to balance board members' interests with the needs of the organization.

Chia Lor discussed how the Youth Programming Committee is an official committee, which functions as a liaison with the different youth groups in the area and oversees the Youth Council as it develops future leaders.  She suggested changes to the committee which include meetings occurring every month at the District 1 office.  They are currently looking for a committee chairperson.  The other programming includes Young Mentors Group, run by Timothy Turner, which focuses on youth personal and social development, the Open Mic and Speakers of Color Series.

The next order of business was discussion and approval of the District 1 Draft Equity Plan.  The history of the Plan was reviewed by Betsy Leach and the Council discussed its relation to our City Contract. The substance of the plan was unanimously approved by the Council.

New Board Business:
Financial Reports:  The monthly financial reports were presented by B. Leach for information only.

Fundraising:
Bonnie Watkins spoke briefly about plans to raise funds for the Council and the board approved moving forward with the planning for this effort.

Old Business:
Conflict of Interest:  President Paul Sawyer reviewed the Conflict of Interest annual report that each board member is asked to fill out. He stated that members are best off over-reporting potential conflicts and reminded members that each can bring up potential conflicts for anyone.

A brief announcement was made about staff updates and upcoming events.
New board member, Patty McDonald announced that she has created an online means for board members to share documents.

Staff announced that the Eastview Rec center is now open with Saint Paul Urban Tennis as a tenant. They will hold a National Night Out celebration this year. There will be a second police community event on June 6th  at Eastern Heights Lutheran Church 616 Ruth Street starting at 6p. Board members are welcome and encouraged to attend.

Meeting adjourned at 8:36 pm.
