Community Organizer Position Description
The Southeast Community Organization (SECO) is a nonprofit neighborhood association promoting resident involvement in community issues, and ensuring that neighborhood voices are heard in government decision-making. We address issues related to transportation, economic development, recreation, community building, renters rights, and general neighborhood improvement. We develop and sponsor community events, projects, and programs that build community connections and enhance the quality of life in our neighborhoods.
The Community Organizer position
The Community Organizer assists the executive director in community engagement efforts related to event and program coordination, door-knocking, communications, staffing board committees, and other areas assigned by the executive director.

The Community Organizer position
The Community Organizer assists the executive director in community engagement efforts related to event and program coordination, door-knocking, communications, staffing board committees, and other areas assigned by the executive director.
Event and Program Coordination
- Plan and execute SECO’s community engagement events in collaboration with the executive director, board members, and volunteers (e.g., annual meeting, summer entertainment series, drop-off day, canvassing, phone banking, community informational sessions, Sun Ray Spooktacular).
- Work with the executive director to maintain SECO’s Little Free Library.
- Administer SECO’s annual election and new board member training in coordination with the executive director.
- Create new community events and programs to meet identified resident needs.
Communications
- Collaborate with the executive director to write and design a bi-monthly e-newsletter.
- Update the SECO website, and social media with events and notices.
- Respond to phone, email, website, social media, and in-person inquiries from residents, businesses, city agencies and others; maintain office hours for community members.
- Create promotional materials for events and programs; write and edit emails and letters.
Committee Support and Outreach
- Provide staff support for the SECO Land Use, Environmental, and Communications Committees, including logistical assistance, issues research, and communications on committee activities.
- Help recruit new members to the SECO Board and SECO Committees
- Represent SECO at district council meetings and others as determined by the executive director.
Fundraising and General Operations
- Participate in identifying and preparing applications for grants.
- Develop and foster relationships with businesses and other potential grantors.
- Assist the executive director in daily office operations, including bill paying, record keeping, managing email lists, purchasing office supplies, and maintaining the office.
- Meet regularly with, and seek advice from, the executive director and board president.
Required Qualifications
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Excellent interpersonal skills, and the ability to create and maintain network of relationships
- Organizational skills, including an ability to establish priorities, work efficiently with frequent interruptions, and plan events
- Critical thinking and problem solving skills
- Ability to handle change and conflict with professionalism and grace
- Demonstrated comfort working with diverse ages, ethnicities, and income levels
- Enthusiasm for community engagement work
- Skills in organizing and maintaining detailed records and data for reporting purposes
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, social media, and other computer skills
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior experience working as a community, labor, or campaign organizer
- Experience working within Saint Paul, especially in local government or nonprofits
- A connection to the Southeast Saint Paul community
- Bilingual
